Glengarry's Field of Poppies draws huge community support

Poppies created from of all kinds of arts and crafts are being placed around Glengarry's Lone Pine ahead of Anzac Day.

President of the Glengarry and District Community Association, Dean Sutton, said the tradition began last year during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Because of Covid, we couldn't have a physical service but we still wanted to recogise Anzac Day," Dean said.

"So we put a call out to the community to make some poppies and we were flooded with them.

"People made all sorts out egg cartons, knitting and crochet, CDs and things like that."

Dean said he is impressed at how the project grew in the last year.

"We've probably got a couple of thousand poppies now.

"We generally go out there at daybreak and plant the poppies.

"Unfortunately Anzac Day and Remembrance Day last year rained by the end of the day, so we weren't able to leave them out for more than a day.

"So we'll go down early on Anzac Day morning and plant them, then see how we go weatherwise," Dean said.
