Gippsland hospitals among those impacted by statewide cyber attack

Hospital computer systems in Gippsland and other parts of Victoria have been hacked, causing chaos for healthcare providers.

Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed the cyber attack in hospitals and health services in Gippsland and southwest Victoria but is unable to say yet whether patient data has been accessed.

Emergency health services are operating normally but outpatient services have been heavily affected, with bookings and health records shut down as a precaution.

Mr Andrews says local cyber security experts are being joined by counterparts from Canberra, while Victoria Police is also investigating.

The attack was uncovered late on Monday, according to a statement by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

"The cyber incident, which was uncovered on Monday, has blocked access to several systems by the infiltration of ransomware, including financial management," the statement read.

"Hospitals have isolated and disconnected a number of systems such as internet to quarantine the infection."

"At this time, there is no suggestion that personal patient information has been accessed".

The government said hospitals and services of the Gippsland Health Alliance have been impacted. The Alliance includes major hospitals at Traralgon, Sale, Bairnsdale and Warragul.
