PGA Super 6 In Gippsland

Big Names Head To Yallourn For PGA Event

Story and photos by Pat Gordon

It's not every day that a former U.S Open Golf Champion graces a Gippsland course, but for the next few days that will be the reality at the PGA Tour of Australasia's inaugural Gippsland Super 6 event.

2006 Open Winner Geoff Ogilvy headlines a field which will take to the greens of the Yallourn Golf Club, which includes European Tour mainstay Marcus Fraser and former AFL star and Glengarry local Brendon Goddard.

The trio who have formed a friendship and play together most weeks, will be sure to draw a crowd and a level of intrigue.

Goddard who spoke about his passion for golf, says he is looking forward to the challenge of taking the course in a pro event.

"(It's) something that's new for myself, not playing in too many pro events of this caliber anyway, Tier 2 on the Australasian Tour" Goddard said.

"I've always been an avid golfer, golfing tragic my wife would say".

Growing up in Glengarry led Goddard to local courses from a young age, he credits the Toongabbie Golf Club as the place he learnt the love for the game

"Dad was the kind of self-proclaimed super intendant there, used to water greens and tees out of his old HQ Holden Ute, so I used to go down there with my brother at the time, and since I was knee high to a grass hopper and swing and hit golf balls around while dad was watering" Goddard said.

"Predominately played Toongabbie and a lot of courses around that area, Heyfield, Morwell and Traralgon in more recent years as I got older".

Ogilvy also had fond memories of playing in Gippsland through his junior days, and was looking forward to taking to country courses again after a layoff from the game.

"We used to play a great 72 hole in Yarram, I used to love Yarram the golf course, Traralgon we used to play a bit" Ogilvy said.

"Yeah we played quite a lot down here growing up, it was kind of a lot of the talent in my era came from around here, like down in Gippsland a lot of golfers came from down here, we played here a fair bit but it's been a long time like 20 years".
