Target closures and branding conversions

Three Target Country stores in Gippsland will close next year and another two will convert to K Mart after Wesfarmers' review of its underperforming retail chain. Two other stores in the region will remain open under the Target brand.

Marked to close in early to mid 2021 are the Target Country stores at Bairnsdale, Traralgon and Warragul.

Converting to K Mart early next year are the Target Country stores at Lakes Entrance and Leongatha.

Meanwhile Target stores at Sale and Wonthaggi will continue to trade as they are.

These changes follow the closure of the large Target in the Mid Valley shopping centre at Morwell last year.

Managing Director of Wesfarmers, Rob Scott, told investors on Friday that his company had been trying to fix Target for the past decade, but mid-market apparel/home players had been "really challenged" in a disrupted market, where international chains and online sales savaged the incumbents.

The company's review had been happening before the coronavirus pandemic and the announcement was not driven by that.

After the Target stores close next year, shoppers will still be able to make purchases through the web site www.target.com.au.
