Walhalla survives fire

Bushfire reaches into the Walhalla valley

Communities around Walhalla remain on alert as a bushfire continues to burn out-of-control north-east of the the town.

The blaze prompted two Emergency warnings yesterday but both have been downgraded to Watch and Act messages.

The town lost one building, an old miner's cottage, but good work by fire crews protected the town's other properties and assets.

Heavy rainfall last night dampened flames but people are being told to stay informed and monitor conditions.

A Watch & Act message remains in place for towns including Cowwarr, Heyfield, Seaton, Toongabbie and Glenmaggie.

The Gippsland Regional Control Centre will issue a Situation Update later this morning with information about all fires their agencies are working on.

Two primary schools are closed today. Students at Cowwar and Toongabbie schools should stay home.

Some bus routes are also not operating.
